Abstract Dahlia is an important ornamental crop and widely used as a garden plant in beds and mixed borders as well as a cut flower in bouquets and flower arrangements. Understanding the factors that support sustainable flower production is essential for dahlia growers to increase their profits. Two key variables that define leaf development during the vegetative phase of a crop are the rate of appearance of leaves on the main stem and the final number of leaves. The objective in this study was to determine the phyllochron and the final leaf pair number (FLPN) in cut dahlias cultivars grown in different locations. Three on farm experiments varying from two to eight cut dahlia cultivars were conducted during two years (2021/2022) in six locations in Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. The number of unfolded leaf pairs (NLP - an unfolded leaf was assumed when the foliolates edges were not touching anymore) on each plant was counted once or twice a week, depending on the farm, until the last leaf pair was unfolded. The NLP was linearly regressed against TT (thermal time °C day-1) and the phyllochron (oC day leaf pair-1) was calculated as the slope of the linear regression. The results indicated that the phyllochron of dahlia cultivars varied between 45.7 to 95.6 °C pair of leaves-1 and 8 to 14 of final number of pair of leaves in the first experiment, 27.2 to 97.4 °C pair of leaves-1 and 6 to 15 of final leaf pair number in the second experiment and 46.8 at 106.4 °C leaf pair-1 and 6 to 13 the final leaf pair number in the third. Thus, there was no significant difference between the sites in the phyllochron and NFP variables.

Resumo A dália é uma importante cultura ornamental e amplamente utilizada como planta de jardim em canteiros e bordaduras mistas, bem como flor de corte em buquês e arranjos florais. O entendimento dos fatores que propiciam uma produção sustentável de flores é essencial para que os produtores de dálias aumentem seus lucros. Duas variáveis-chave que definem o desenvolvimento da folha durante a fase vegetativa de uma cultura são a taxa de aparecimento de folhas na haste principal e o número final de folhas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o filocrono e o número final de pares de folhas em cultivares de dálias de corte em diferentes localidades. Três experimentos em fazendas variando de dois a oito cultivares de dália de corte foram conduzidos durante dois anos (2021/2022) em seis localidades do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, sul do Brasil. O número de pares de folhas desdobradas (NLP - uma folha desdobrada foi assumida quando as bordas folioladas não se tocavam mais) em cada planta foi contado uma ou duas vezes por semana, dependendo da fazenda, até que o último par de folhas fosse desdobrado. O NLP foi regredido linearmente contra TT (tempo termal °C dia-1) e o filocrono (ºC dia par folha-1) foi calculado como a inclinação da regressão linear. Os resultados indicaram que o filocrono de cultivares de dálias variou entre 45.7 a 95.6°C par de folhas-1 e 8 a 14 de número finais de par de folhas no primeiro experimento, 27.2 a 97.4 °C par de folhas-1 e 6 a 15 de número finais de par de folhas no segundo experimento e 46.8 a 106.4 °C par de folhas-1 e 6 a 13 o número final de par de folhas no terceiro. Desta forma não apresentou diferença significativa entre os locais nas variáveis filocrono e NFP.

Abstract Dahlia is an ornamental plant well adapted to open field cultivation and is one of the crops in the “Flowers for All” Project, a nation-wide extension project. High temperatures and the duration of extreme heat waves are expected to be more frequent in the next decades. Therefore, understanding and determining the high temperature that causes irreversible damage in Dahlia flowers is of high interest for preparing farmers to mitigate and adapt their crop to climate change. The objective of this study was to determine the upper lethal temperature that causes irreversible damage on buds and flowers on open field grown dahlia. Commercial open field dahlia crops in five locations in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) State, Southern Brazil, during two growing seasons (2021/22 and 2022/23) were used in this study. During the period from 20 December 2021 to 30 January 2022 and from 14 January 2023 to 20 January 2023, daily observations were made in the dahlias in the five locations in order to identify symptoms of heat stress on leaves, buds and flowers such as leaf rolling, wilting, dry leaf edges, sunscald, burning and rotting. The appearance of those symptoms was correlated with maximum daily air temperature in order to estimate the lethal temperature. Irreversible heat injury in buds and flowers of open field grown dahlia start when air temperature reaches 35 oC. Artificial shading, irrigation and planting date are management practices that can help farmers to protect dahlia flowers from heat stress.

Resumo A dália é uma planta ornamental bem adaptada ao cultivo a campo e é uma das culturas do Projeto “Flores para Todos”, um projeto de extensão nacional. Estima-se que as altas temperaturas e a duração de ondas de calor extremo sejam mais frequentes nas próximas décadas. Portanto, entender e determinar a alta temperatura que causa danos irreversíveis nas flores da dália é de grande interesse para preparar os agricultores para mitigar e adaptar sua cultura às mudanças climáticas. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a temperatura letal superior que causa danos irreversíveis em botões e flores de dália cultivada a campo. Culturas comerciais de dálias cultivadas a campo em cinco locais no estado do Rio Grande do Sul (RS), sul do Brasil, durante duas temporadas de cultivo (2021/22 e 2022/23) foram utilizadas neste estudo. Durante o período de 20 de dezembro de 2021 a 30 de janeiro de 2022 e de 14 de janeiro de 2023 a 20 de janeiro de 2023, foram feitas observações diárias nas dálias nas cinco localidades, a fim de identificar sintomas de estresse térmico em folhas, brotos e flores, como enrolamento de folhas, murchamento, bordas secas das folhas, queimaduras solares, queimaduras e apodrecimento. O aparecimento desses sintomas foi correlacionado com a temperatura máxima diária do ar para estimar a temperatura letal. Lesões térmicas irreversíveis em botões e flores de dálias cultivadas a campo começam quando a temperatura do ar atinge 35 °C. Sombreamento artificial, irrigação e data de plantio são práticas de manejo que podem ajudar os agricultores a proteger as dálias do estresse térmico.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the selectivity of pre- and post-emergent herbicides and their efficiency in weed control, as well as the growth and quality of floral stems, in a gladiolus (Gladiolus x grandiflorus) crop in two growing seasons. The experiments were carried out in the field, where the planted gladiolus received the application of pre- and post-emergent herbicides, with and without mechanical weed control. At 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after emergence (DAE), monocotyledon and eudicotyledon control and phytotoxicity to gladiolus plants were evaluated. At 28 DAE, the shoot dry matter of weeds and gladiolus plants was also evaluated. The s-metolachlor and diuron pre-emergent herbicides and the haloxyfop-p-methyl post-emergent herbicide are selective to gladiolus plants in both seasons, which allows of the production of floral stems with commercial quality. The s-metolachlor and haloxyfop-p-methyl herbicides also promote an efficient control of monocotyledons regardless of the growing season. Although, when applied, saflufenacil and 2,4-D cause phytotoxicity in the vegetative phase of gladiolus, they do not affect the production of floral stems and control satisfactorily eudicotyledons in the second season.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a seletividade de herbicidas pré e pós-emergentes e a sua eficiência no controle de plantas daninhas, bem como o crescimento e a qualidade de hastes florais, na cultura do gladíolo (Gladiolus x grandiflorus), em duas épocas de cultivo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos a campo, onde os gladíolos plantados receberam a aplicação de herbicidas pré e pós-emergentes, com e sem controle mecânico das plantas daninhas. Aos 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após a emergência (DAE), avaliaram-se o controle de monocotiledôneas e eudicotiledôneas, além da fitotoxicidade no gladíolo. Aos 28 DAE, também foi avaliada a massa seca da parte aérea das plantas daninhas e dos gladíolos. Os herbicidas pré-emergentes s-metolacloro e diuron e o pós-emergente haloxifope-p-metílico são seletivos ao gladíolo, em ambas as épocas de cultivo, o que possibilita a produção de hastes florais com qualidade comercial. Os herbicidas s-metolacloro e haloxifope-p-metílico também promovem controle eficiente de monocotiledôneas independentemente da época de cultivo. Embora, quando aplicados, saflufenacil e 2,4-D causem fitotoxicidade na fase vegetativa do gladíolo, não afetam a produção de hastes florais e controlam satisfatoriamente as eudicotiledôneas no segundo cultivo.

Resumo A vernalização, natural ou artificial, é uma exigência fisiológica de algumas espécies para suprir a necessidade por baixas temperaturas para que ocorra o seu completo desenvolvimento. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever um protocolo da transformação de uma geladeira doméstica em um protótipo de BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) visando à vernalização de materiais propagativos da cultura da estatice. O primeiro passo consiste na instalação de um controlador de temperatura para que se mantenha uma temperatura constante no interior da geladeira (neste caso 10 °C). Pensando em vernalização de mudas, ainda é necessário à instalação de um sistema de luzes no interior da geladeira. O controle de tempo em que as luzes permanecem acesas no interior do protótipo é realizado através da instalação de um Timer ajustado para que as luzes permaneçam ligadas, ininterruptamente, por 10 horas. Para testar a eficácia do protótipo foi realizado um experimento on farm com a cultura da estatice (Limonium sinuatum L.) em 5 locais no Rio Grande do Sul. As mudas foram vernalizadas à temperatura interna de 10 °C e fotoperíodo de 10 horas durante 3 semanas. A duração deste experimento foi de 8 meses e ao fim deste observou-se que as plantas de estatice foram corretamente vernalizadas, pois as plantas emitiram hastes florais e apresentaram desenvolvimento satisfatório ao longo do ciclo. Portanto, a adaptação de uma geladeira doméstica em um protótipo de BOD de forma economicamente viável e de fácil montagem é possível. Sendo uma excelente alternativa à pequenos produtores.

Abstract Vernalization, natural or artificial, is a physiological requirement of some plants to meet the need for low temperatures for its complete development to occur. The objective of this article is to describe a protocol of transforming a domestic refrigerator into a BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) prototype aimed at vernalizing propagating materials statice crop. The first step is to install a temperature controller to maintain a constant temperature inside the refrigerator (10 °C). Thinking of seedling vernalization, it is still necessary to install a system of lights inside the refrigerator. The control of the time that the lights remain on inside the prototype is carried out by installing a Timer adjusted so that the lights remained on, uninterruptedly, for 10 hours. To test the effective ness of the prototype, an on-farm experiment was carried out with the statice (Limonium sinuatum L.) crop at 5 locations in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The seedlings were vernalized at an internal temperature of 10 °C and photoperiod of 10 hours for 3 weeks. The duration of this experiment was 8 months and at the end of this observed that statice plants were correctly vernalized because the plants emitted flower stems and showed satisfactory development throughout the growing cycle. Therefore, that the adaptation of a domestic refrigerator as a BOD economically viable and easy mounting prototype is possible. Being an excellent alternative to small producers.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi caracterizar o padrão comercial quantitativo de hastes florais de gladíolo produzidas no sistema de cultivo mínimo e convencional do solo em duas épocas de colheita em Santa Catarina. Foram realizados experimentos em locais com clima subtropical e solos classificados como Cambissolo e Nitossolo. O gladíolo foi produzido em canteiros com revolvimento intensivo do solo e, em cultivo mínimo, no qual o revolvimento do solo foi realizado apenas nas linhas de plantio sobre palhada. As cultivares utilizadas foram Red Beauty e White Goddess em duas épocas de colheita, Dia das Mães e Namorados. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com 12 repetições, sendo os tratamentos: duas épocas de colheita e dois sistemas de manejo do solo. Quando as hastes florais estavam em ponto de colheita realizaram-se as medidas para caracterização dos padrões quantitativos: comprimento total da haste e da espiga, espessura da haste e o número de floretes. Com base nesses dados, as hastes foram distribuídas nas classes 75, 90, 110 e não comercializável. O padrão das hastes de gladíolo produzidas em sistema de cultivo mínimo em condições edafoclimáticas de SC para colheita no Dia das Mães cumpriu as exigências do mercado de flores, sendo a maioria das hastes classificadas como 90 e 110. Portanto, o gladíolo pode ser produzido em sistema de cultivo mínimo sem comprometer o padrão das hastes florais. Esse é o primeiro passo para o incentivo de cultivo de flores sob um olhar conservacionista, de modo a orientarmos cultivos agrícolas mais sustentáveis.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to characterize the commercial quantitative standards of floral stems of gladiolus plants grown under minimum tillage and conventional systems in two harvest seasons in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Experiments were conducted in locations with subtropical climate using soils classified as Typic Dystrudept (Cambissolo) and Typic Hapludox (Nitossolo). Gladiolus plants were grown in beds with intensive soil turning, and under minimum tillage system, in which soil turning was done only in the planting rows. Plants of the cultivars Red Beauty and White Goddess were evaluated in two harvest seasons, Mothers' Day, and Valentine's Day. A completely randomized experimental design with 12 replications was used; the treatments consisted of two harvest seasons and two soil management systems. The flower stem and inflorescence lengths, stem thickness, and number of florets were measured when the plants were at the harvest point to characterize their commercial quantitative standards. These data were used to distribute the stems into four classes (75, 90, 110 and non-marketable). The stem standard of gladiolus plants grown under minimum tillage system and the edaphoclimatic conditions of the state of Santa Catarina in the Mother's Day harvest met the flower market requirements, with most stems classified into the classes 90 and 110. Therefore, gladiolus plants can be grown under minimum tillage system without affecting the flower stem development. This work is the first step to promote the growth of flowers under a conservationist perspective, focused on a more sustainable agriculture.

ABSTRACT Gladiola ( Gladiolus × grandiflorus Hort.) is an important cut flower for small farmers in Brazil. While the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which causes interannual variability to air temperature in Southern Brazil, can shift the optimum planting window of gladiola, an increase in temperature due to climate change can accelerate gladiola flowering and cause injuries by heat. The objective of this study was to assess the potential climate change effects on gladiola optimum planting date for specific market dates and investigate injuries occurrence on spikes in the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Field experiments were conducted from 2016 to 2018 at four different locations across the Rio Grande do Sul State to evaluate the performance of the PhenoGlad model in simulating the developmental stages of gladiola. The PhenoGlad model was run on climate scenarios of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) named RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The climate change scenarios caused a delay in the optimum planting date to harvest gladiola for All Souls’ Day across the Rio Grande do Sul State. For harvesting spikes for Mother’s Day, negative anomalies (earliest planting date) occurred in the warmest regions, because the very high temperature extended the crop development. Injuries by heat on spikes reached positive anomalies in 70 % of the years in the warmest regions for scenario RCP8.5. To harvest spikes for Mother’s Day, heat injury did not exceed 20 % of the years. Mitigation strategies for farmers to deal with climate change and keep their gladiola production include adjusting the optimum planting date.

ABSTRACT. The objective of this work was to test long-term trends in the planting date of gladiolus to ensure marketing of these flowers on Mother’s Day and All Souls’ Day in Santa Maria (latitude: 29° 43’ S, longitude: 53° 43’ W, and altitude: 95 m), Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Minimum and maximum air temperature data from 106 years were used (1912-2017) to simulate the optimum planting date indicated through the PhenoGlad model, aiming to harvest floral stems for both market dates for early, intermediate I, intermediate II and late cultivars. The homogeneity of the historical series was tested using the run test, and the historical trend was tested by the Mann-Kendal test. The magnitude of the trend was estimated with simple linear regression, and the descriptive statistics were calculated. For marketing on Mother’s Day, there was no historical trend that implied a change in the planting date of gladiolus for any of the development cycles. For marketing on All Souls’ Day, there was a positive historical trend only for the early and intermediate cycles I and II; thus, the increase in air temperature implied a delay of 9.2 days, 9.5 days and 6.9 days for the planting date, respectively, indicating that a shortening of the gladiolus development cycle occurred, mainly in late winter/early spring.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar o zoneamento de risco climático para a cultura do gladíolo (Gladiolus x grandiflorus) nos 497 municípios do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. O modelo PhenoGlad foi utilizado para simular o desenvolvimento da cultura e a ocorrência de danos. Foram realizadas rodadas com o modelo para quatro ciclos de desenvolvimento do gladíolo, ao longo de 34 anos e em 23 regiões no estado. As probabilidades de 10, 20 e 30% de ocorrência de danos por altas e baixas temperaturas foram utilizadas para definir períodos aptos para o cultivo. O Rio Grande do Sul é apto ao cultivo do gladíolo durante a maior parte do ano. Nas regiões mais frias do estado, o período inapto para o plantio ocorre de março a meados de maio devido aos danos causados pela ocorrência de geada. Nas regiões mais quentes, os períodos inaptos são maiores de outubro a janeiro devido à ocorrência de danos por altas temperaturas. Por ser mais criterioso, o nível de 10% de ocorrência de danos é considerado mais adequado para definir os períodos recomendados de plantio.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to develop a climate risk zoning for the gladiolus (Gladiolus x grandiflorus) crop in the 497 municipalities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The PhenoGlad model was used to simulate crop development and the occurrence of damages. The model was run for four developmental cycles of gladiolus over 34 years and in 23 locations in the state. The probabilities of 10, 20, and 30% damages due to low and high temperatures were used to define periods suitable for planting. Rio Grande do Sul is adequate for growing gladiolus during most of the year. In the coldest areas of the state, the inadequate planting dates are from March until mid-May due to frost damage. In the hottest regions, the inadequate planting dates are greater from October to January due to heat damage. Because it is stricter, the 10% level of damage is considered more appropriate to define the periods recommended for planting.

ABSTRACT: Gladiola is an important cut flower worldwide and scheduling field gladiola production is largely dependent on planting at the correct time since its development is controlled by the air temperature. The aim of this study was to configure a planting window of gladiola in order to harvest spikes to be sold on All Souls' Day and Mother's Day holidays in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, taking into account the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phases. The PhenoGlad model, a dynamic process-based simulation model that simulates gladiola phenology on a daily time step was used in this study. Daily minimum and maximum temperatures over 55 years (1961-2015) from 18 weather stations across Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, were used as input data in the PhenoGlad model. The optimum planting window was simulated for each maturity group, location and ENSO phase. For harvesting on All Souls' Day, the optimum planting window had greater variation among the different ENSO phases. For Mother's Day, only Very Strong El Niño events affected the development of gladiola, indicating the weak signal of the phenomenon at this time of the year. A case study in a commercial farm demonstrated the importance of these results for farmers. The planting window for production on Mother's Day in a Neutral year was successfully configured. Determining the optimum planting window by considering the ENSO effect led to a more precise scheduling of gladiola production in southern Brazil.

Resumo Gladíolo (Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort.) também chamado como Palma-de-Santa-Rita, é conhecido no Brasil como flor de Finados e, nos últimos anos, têm se popularizado em outras datas especiais devido à sua robustez, vivacidade e imponência. Porém, existem desafios em relação à produção da espécie para flor de corte, visto que o maior investimento do produtor é com a aquisição de cormos. Devido à escassez de informação técnica, não existem protocolos de produção de cormos totalmente estabelecidos para o gladíolo. Logo, esse artigo técnico teve o propósito de trazer informações relacionadas à técnica de produção de cormos de gladíolo, tendo em vista a sustentabilidade da produção.

Abstract Gladiolus (Gladiolus x grandiflorus Hort.), also called as Palma-de-Santa-Rita, is culturally known in Brazil as the All Soul's' Day flower. In recent years, it has also become popular in other special dates due to its robustness, liveliness, and magnificence. However, there are challenges regarding the cut flower production, since the largest producer investment is the corm acquisition. Due to the insufficiency of technical information, there are no fully established corm production protocols for gladiolus. Therefore, this technical article has the objective of bringing information related to the gladiolus corms production technique, in view of the sustainability of the production.

Resumo O cultivo de flores é uma alternativa de diversificação de produção e renda para as propriedades familiares, sendo o gladíolo uma opção de flor de corte. O objetivo deste trabalho foi divulgar a cultura do gladíolo como alternativa de diversificação e renda para pequenos produtores rurais através de um projeto de extensão onde foram demonstradas as técnicas de manejo da cultura durante o seu ciclo de desenvolvimento. Para isso, foi firmada uma parceria com a instituição de extensão rural EMATER/RS-ASCAR, com o intuito de identificar produtores interessados em cultivar o gladíolo em suas propriedades. O projeto de extensão foi desenvolvido em cinco municípios da região da Depressão Central do Rio Grande do Sul. Juntamente com os extensionistas da EMATER/RS-ASCAR, foi acompanhado o ciclo de desenvolvimento do gladíolo, indicando aos produtores as principais técnicas de manejo do plantio à colheita. Ao todo, foram produzidas aproximadamente 2400 hastes de gladíolo, que foram comercializadas em feiras locais no Dia das Mães. Em todos os locais houve grande procura e consumo das hastes florais, demostrando aceitação do consumidor por hastes de gladíolo para o Dia das Mães. Esta atividade demostrou ser rentável aos produtores familiares. Este sistema de produção incentiva a produção em cadeias curtas, contribui para o crescimento da produção local de flores e pode contribuir para diminuir o êxodo rural e a sustentabilidade das futuras gerações no campo.

Abstract Flower crops are an alternative for diversification in small farms, being gladiolus an option of cut flower. The objective of this study was to disseminate the gladiolus crop as an alternative for diversification and profit for small farms through an extension project where crop management practices were demonstrated during its development cycle. An extension project was carried out in partnership with a rural extension agency, EMATER/RS-ASCAR, to identify the farmers interested in diversifying their production system for growing gladiolus. The extension project was developed in four counties in the Central region of the Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. Together with the extensionists of EMATER/RS-ASCAR, farmers were assisted during the entire production cycle and learned the management practices from planting to harvesting. Altogether, approximately 2,400 gladiolus spikes were produced, which were marketed one week before and during Mother's Day week at local fairs. In all the counties, the demand and consumption of the flower stems were high, demonstrating acceptance of the consumers of gladiolus stems on Mother's Day. The gladiolus production has proven to be profitable for small family properties. This system encourages the production in short-chains, contributes to the growth of local flower production and may contribute for decreasing rural exodus and sustainability for future generations.

RESUMO O objetivo neste estudo foi determinar a duração do ciclo em dias e os parâmetros quantitativos de hastes florais de gladíolo em função da data de plantio e do local de cultivo no Rio Grande do Sul/Brasil. Experimentos de campo foram estabelecidos entre 2014-2015 em três locais (Frederico Westphalen, Itaqui e Santa Maria). O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos completamente casualizados, com seis cultivares de gladíolo em três diferentes datas de plantio em cada local como tratamento. Foram avaliadas a mudança do estágio vegetativo para o reprodutivo, o comprimento da haste, comprimento da espiga e diâmetro da haste no ponto de colheita. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente pela ANOVA e pelo teste de Tukey. Quando plantadas durante o final de julho e início de agosto, cultivares de ciclo precoce (‘Purple Flora’, ‘Rose Friendship’ e ‘White Friendship’) e intermediário (‘Green Star’ e ‘Jester’) produzem hastes florais de gladíolo dentro dos padrões desejados, além de possuir um menor ciclo de crescimento do que cultivares tardias (‘Gold Field’), sendo recomendadas para cultivo comercial no Sul do Brasil.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determine the cycle duration in days and the quantitative parameters, i.e. stem length, spike length and stem diameter of gladiolus floral stems as a function of the planting date and locations in the Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil. Field experiments were established between 2014-2015 in three locations (Frederico Westphalen, Itaqui and Santa Maria). The experimental design was a complete randomized block, with six gladiolus cultivars in three distinct planting dates at each location as treatments. The shift from vegetative to reproductive stage, the stem length, spike length and stem diameter were evaluated. Data was statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test. When planted during late July and early August, cultivars of early cycle (‘Purple Flora’, ‘Rose Friendship’ and ‘White Friendship’) and intermediate cycle (‘Green Star’ and ‘Jester’), produced floral stems of gladiolus in the desired patterns besides as well as having a shorter growth cycle than late cultivars (‘Gold Field’), being recommended for commercial cultivation in Southern Brazil.

RESUMO A época de plantio escolhida para cultivar uma espécie é fator determinante na duração do ciclo de desenvolvimento e na qualidade do produto colhido. O gladíolo é uma espécie que pode ser cultivada ao longo do ano, porém, em alguns períodos poderão ocorrer condições adversas ao cultivo, reduzindo sua qualidade. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos de campo em Santa Maria, RS, (Experimento 1: de agosto de 2011 a julho de 2012 e Experimento 2: de agosto de 2012 a julho de 2013) a fim de quantificar a influência da época de plantio na duração do ciclo e na qualidade das hastes de gladíolo, identificando possíveis danos por altas e baixas temperaturas no produto final. Conclui-se que é possível cultivar gladíolo ao longo do ano, porém a duração do ciclo de desenvolvimento do gladíolo é maior quando o plantio é realizado em períodos de baixas temperaturas, sendo esse dado importante para a programação da data de plantio, especialmente quando se desejar colher em datas pontuais (datas comemorativas). Temperaturas extremas (acima de 35 °C e abaixo de 0 °C) reduzem a qualidade comercial das hastes e até mesmo causam a morte da planta.

ABSTRACT The planting date is an important factor affecting the developmental cycle and quality of final product. Indications from the literature are that gladiolus is a species that can be cultivated throughout the year, but in some periods, adverse conditions may occur, reducing the quality of the flower. Two field experiments (Experiment 1: August 2011 to July 2012 and Experiment 2: August 2012 to July 2013) were conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, to quantify the influence of planting dates on the duration of the developmental cycle and on the quality of flower stems in gladiolus, identifying possible damages by high and low temperatures in the final product. It is concluded that it is possible to cultivate gladiolus throughout the year, but the duration of gladiolus cycle is higher when planting is carried out in periods of low temperatures, and this is important for scheduling the planting date, mainly for meeting specific market demand (commemorative dates). Extreme temperatures (above 35 °C and below 0 °C) reduce the commercial flowers quality and even cause the death of plants.

RESUMO O gladíolo é uma flor de corte de grande importância nos mercados nacional e mundial. A haste floral, do tipo espiga, é composta por floretes que apresentam abertura acropetal. O conhecimento da velocidade de abertura desses floretes, representada pelo antocrono, pode auxiliar no planejamento das atividades de colheita e comercialização. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: estimar a temperatura base para abertura de floretes em gladíolo e determinar o antocrono, com a unidade de tempo representada pela soma térmica. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos de campo, em Santa Maria, RS, durante dois anos (2011 a 2013), sendo cada experimento composto por 12 datas de plantio e três cultivares. A soma térmica diária (STd) foi calculada pela diferença entre a temperatura média e a temperatura base (Tb) e, a soma térmica acumulada, pelo somatório das STd. Para a estimativa Tb para abertura de floretes, utilizaram-se os dados do número de floretes abertos (NFA), coletados nos experimentos. Conclui-se que Tb para abertura de floretes em gladíolo é 6 ºC e que o antocrono é, em média, 14,7 ºC dia por florete, mas varia com a disponibilidade de radiação solar durante o florescimento da espiga.

ABSTRACT Gladiolus is an important cut flower in national and international markets. The floral stem, a kind of spike, is composed of florets that have acropetal opening. Knowledge on the opening speed of florets, represented by the anthochron, can assist in planning harvesting and marketing activities. The objectives of this study were to estimate the base temperature for floret opening in gladiolus and to determine the anthochron, with the time unit represented by the thermal time. Two field experiments were conducted in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil, for two years (2011-2013), each experiment composed of 12 planting dates and three cultivars. The daily thermal time (STd) was calculated as the difference between the daily mean temperature and the base temperature (Tb) and the accumulated thermal time was obtained by the sum of STd. To estimate the Tb for floret opening, we used the number of open florets (NFA) collected in the experiments. We concluded that the Tb for floret opening in gladiolus is 6 °C and for the anthochron is, on average, 14.7 ºC day per floret, but the anthochron Tb varies according to solar radiation during spike flowering period.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi simular a produtividade de duas cultivares de mandioca em dois cenários climáticos futuros do IPCC, o SRES-A1B (Cmip3) e o RCP4.5 (Cmip5), para o Rio Grande do Sul. Foi utilizado o modelo Simanihot, com o submodelo de balanço hídrico do solo diário sequencial de Thornthwaite e Mather, e os cenários SRES- A1B (Cmip3 - 3o Projeto de Intercomparação de modelos globais) e o RCP4.5 (Cmip5 - 5o Projeto de Intercomparação de modelos globais) do 4o e 5o relatório do IPCC, respectivamente, regionalizados por downscaling dinâmico com modelo RegCM3 e RegCM4 (Modelo Climático Regional), respectivamente. As cultivares utilizadas no estudo foram a 'Fepagro - RS13' (uso forrageira) e 'Estrangeira' (uso para mesa). Em ambas há aumento na produtividade de raízes em cenários climáticos futuros. A cultivar de mesa se beneficia mais na produtividade de raízes no cenário com maior concentração de CO2 (cenário Cmip3), enquanto a cultivar forrageira, se beneficia mais no cenário Cmip5. Nos três períodos futuros (2010-2039, 2040-2069 e 2070-2099), as mudanças na produtividade são sempre mais expressivas no último período (2070-2099) e nas primeiras datas de plantio (01/09 e 01/10). A região do Rio Grande do Sul com maiores mudanças na produtividade é a nordeste, a qual, no clima atual é a mais fria do Estado, com temperatura mínima do ar no inverno entre 6 e 8°C.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to simulate the yield of two cassava cultivars in two IPCC future climate scenarios, the SRES-A1B (Cmip3) and the RCP4.5 (Cmip5), for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Simanihot model, with the Thornthwaite and Mather water balance sub-model, and the SRES-A1B (Cmip3 - Third Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) and RCP4.5 (Cmip5 - Fifth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project) scenarios of the Fourth and Fifth IPCC Assessment Report, respectively, was used. Cassava cultivars used in this study were 'Fepagro - RS13' (forrage) and 'Estrangeira' (human consumption). In both cultivars, there was an increase in tuberous roots yield in future climate scenarios. The cultivar for human consumption benefits more roots yield in the scenario with higher CO2 (Cmip3 scenario); whereas, the forage cultivar benefits more the Cmip5 scenario. Among the three future periods (2010-2039, 2040-2069 e 2070-2099), changes in tuberous roots yield are more evident in the end of the century period (2070-2099) and for early planting dates (01 September and 01 October). The northeastern region of the state has the greatest changes in tuberous roots yield in future climates, because this is the coldest region, with winter minimum temperature during between 6 and 8oC.
